General Wedding Information

Congratulations and thank you for considering St James Church for your religious ceremony.
The following pages will give you all the information that you might need in planning your marriage at St James Episcopal Church in Florence.

Legal requirements
Before your religious ceremony at St James, Italian law requires that you have had a civil marriage .This can be completed before you leave your home country or here in Italy with the correct license.
We will need to see a copy of your marriage certificate before the ceremony can take place in the church.

For more information about U.S. citizens marrying in Florence, see the U.S. Embassy’s webpages:

Your Ceremony

We follow the ‘Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage‘ from the Book of Common Prayer.
The structure of the service provides opportunities for members of the family and friends to read from the Scriptures and we have included some suggestions to help you.The Episcopal Church Liturgy does not include additions such as Unity candles.

We will also be happy to help in any other queries or specific requests you may have .
To celebrate your marriage in an Episcopal Church ,it is not essential that you either be Episcopalian or be attending an Episcopal Church although we encourage you to establish a connection with an Episcopal or Anglican church in your neighborhood in order to become familiar with our tradition. In the Episcopal Church, the clergy are in charge of the Liturgy, and direct the wedding.

Wedding Planning

St James is  able to help you with the service at the church only. Flowers, photographers, the reception, etc., must all be organised by yourself or your wedding planner. We do recommend that you think about working with one of the many planners in your country or in Tuscany who can organise everything for you . Trying to organise things yourself, a long way away from Florence and possibly speaking little Italian can be a daunting task.
The contribution you make to St James for your marriage  will assist the Church in its maintenance and  many activities to help the Florence community. Click here to see about suggested donation amounts.

Special Music

Our organist is available to help  with any music, singers or instrumentalists, please contact him directly. His costs  need to be paid to him and are in addition to the church donation.

We do not allow the playing of prerecorded music at any time before, after or during the ceremony.

Information to pass on to your photographer and/or Videographer

Certain requirements are expected as follows:-
No flash photography is permitted during the service itself. A flash can be used during the brides entrance and when the couple leave. After the service additional photos reenacting the service may be made.
