Our monthly Thrift Shop sells donated clothing, shoes, household items, linens, toys, and more. It’s open on the last Wednesday of each month, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, from September through June. We take a break in July and August.
All proceeds from the Thrift Shop support the St. James Food Bank.
Everything we sell has been donated. We accept clothing, shoes, household items, linens, toys, and more, as long as it’s in good condition and easy to move.
Drop off donations at St. James:
Or call +39 055 294 417 to arrange another time.
The Thrift Shop runs on volunteers. If you’d like to help sort, set up, or sell, we’d love to have you. Contact the Church Office to get involved.
Every Thursday morning from 10 AM until 11 AM, we offer food packages to those in need in Florence. Each package includes canned goods, pasta or rice, baby supplies, and feminine products. Anyone who comes can also take home items that didn’t sell at our monthly Thrift Shop. It’s a small operation but it is run entirely by volunteers, and it’s been part of St. James for years.
We go through diapers quickly, especially sizes 5 and 6. If you can spare a pack, drop it in the grocery cart in the nave or at the parish office during office hours. We can never have enough – the need is enormous and they are costly!

The Children’s Lending Library maintains an extensive collection of children’s and young adults’ books. For a modest annual family subscription fee, parents can check out books for their children.
The library is hosted by St. James Church as an outreach ministry to the Florentine community. It is an independent, volunteer-run, non-denominational community service.
The Children’s Lending Library sponsors parties at Halloween, Christmas, and Easter, and often seeks volunteers to help keep things tidy. For more information, visit their blog Childrens Lending Library Blog or their Facebook Page.
Inaugurated in 2024, the Ukrainian Lending Library maintains a collection of books for children and young adults in Ukrainian, and hosts seasonal events throughout the year.
St. James manages a significant collection of books in English for free circulation within the community. The collection is housed in the undercroft. Feel free to browse, or register to take a book home to read! The Lending Library is open during parish office hours and on Sundays before and after the 11.00 am worship service.
Come grow with us in the rectory garden at St. James! We’re excited to offer seasonal volunteer opportunities for parishioners and community members to join our master gardener in residence, David Wohlgemuth, in tending to our beautiful church grounds. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious about planting and pruning, there’s a place for you in the garden.
Under the expert guidance of David, volunteers will help with planting, weeding, harvesting, composting, and caring for the seasonal blooms and vegetables that make our garden a place of peace and beauty. This is a great way to learn more about sustainable gardening, enjoy time outdoors, and connect with others in the parish.
Garden workdays will be scheduled throughout the spring, summer, and early fall, with flexible times to accommodate all levels of availability. Volunteers of all ages are welcome – just bring your gloves, your curiosity, and your love for creation!
To sign up or learn more, contact the Parish Office or speak with David after Sunday service.Â

St. James awards community grants annually as part of our commitment to supporting meaningful work across our broader community. These annual grants are a permanent line item in our parish budget and have been for years, reflecting our sustained dedication to this mission.Â
Our grants are directed toward organizations that explicitly support the gospel mission of assisting widows, orphans, the forgotten, the imprisoned, the stranger and traveler, immigrants and refugees, and all those who are vulnerable or marginalized. To be eligible for consideration, organizations must be recognized as non-profits in whatever country they are headquartered and/or operational. All grant applications must be submitted or sponsored by a St. James parishioner. This parishioner connection ensures that the grants support causes our community knows and cares about deeply.
We encourage all parishioners to submit applications on behalf of deserving nonprofits when the call for proposals is open, usually each autumn. Whether you volunteer with an organization, serve on a board, or simply know of impactful work being done in our community, we welcome your nominations. Please note that grants will not be awarded to the same organization in consecutive years, allowing us to support a wider range of causes over time.Â
You can view our past grantees to see the breadth of organizations we have supported in the past.
In recent years, we have awarded grants to organizations working across diverse contexts and continents, including nonprofits in Italy, the United States, and Africa. These grants reflect our commitment to supporting transformative work wherever it is needed most.
